I implemented all your suggestions, except for the #_sessions table delete: I can't find it in phpMyAdmin.
Tested again, leaving the browser window open without any activity for an hour and it's not logging me off. I can come back and happily continue browsing the front-end.
It's not a major disaster for my particular site, but it should work as intended . . .
